Geocache Description:

Located near a historic site in Fort Seybert, WV

Fort Seybert was attacked on 28 April 1758 by about 40 Shawnee under the leadership of Killbuck, the Shawnee Chief. There were about 40 people, mostly women, in the Dyer Settlement who depended on the fort for protection. Many of the men had gone across the Shenandoah Mountain, probably on a hunting party. Peter Hawe's wife and Wallace, a bound boy, went out to milk some cows and were the first to be captured. William Dyer was killed while out hunting. Nicholas SEYBERT, son of Captain Jacob SEYBERT, and about 15 years of age, placed himself in the blockhouse and wounded one of the Indian. Killbuck called to the settlers to give up promising mercy if they complied. What prompted Captain SEYBERT to surrender is not known. Nicholas SEYBERT might have saved the day had his musket not been knocked down when he had Killbuck in his sights. The ball from the musket raised the dust at Killbuck's feet. As the Indians entered the fort Killbuck killed Captain Jacob SEYBERT with a blow to the head from a tomahawk. As they rounded up the captives, the Indians set fire to the fort, killing Hannah Hinkle who may have been bedridden inside the fort. A man named Robertson was able to escape via the river, and made his way across the Shenandoah Mountains.

The site where this took place is near the cache site. a re-enactment takes place near the original site every year during The Treasure Mountain Festival.
