Earthcache am Steinbruch im Ottenhäuser Grund
Ungefähr 7 km nordöstlich von Schweinfurt (zwischen Hausen und Ottenhausen) ist der Steinbruch des Ottenhäusener Grundes zu finden. Er wurde von ca. 1963 bis Ende 1998 betrieben.
Nach der Stillegung dieses Steinbruchs wurde aus Kostengründen von einer Zuschüttung abgesehen und damit wurde er seinem Schicksal überlassen. Mittlerweile steht der Steinbruch, in dem sich ein natürlicher Grundwassersee gebildet hat unter Naturschutz, weil sich im Laufe der Jahre viele Tier- und Pflanzenarten dort angesiedelt haben, die teilweise sogar vom Aussterben bedroht sind.
About 7 km to the north-east of Schweinfurt (between Hausen and Ottenhausen) you can find the stone quarry of the Ottenhäusener Grund. It was commissioned from approx. 1963 till the end of 1998. Because of cost reasons it never get filled up after the shut down and so it was consigned to its fade.
Now the stone quarry is asigned as a natural protected area. A natural ground-water-lake has been formed and in the course of the years many animal species and botanical species have settled there, eben some which are critically endangered.
Im Steinbruch sind verschiedene Schichten des unteren und mittleren Muschelkalkes aufgeschlossen. Die Klüfte sind überwiegend mit Calcit ausgeheilt und verkleidet. Der Bereich des mittleren Muschelkalkes war Abraum, der untere Muschelkalk fand als Straßenschotter und Mineralbeton Verwendung.
In the stone quarry different layers of the lower and middle mussel lime are developed. The gaps are healed out and disguised with Calcit predominantly. The area of the middle mussel lime was overburden, the lower mussel lime was used as street grit and mineral concrete.
Beim Abbau wurde damals auch Coelestin gefunden.
Coelestin ist ein seltenes Strontium-Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der Sulfate - ein wasserfreies Sulfat ohne fremde Anionen aus der Barytgruppe. Dieses Sulfat kann farblos, weiß, gelblich oder blau sein. Meist kommt es in Blautönen vor, woher auch der Name stammt (lat. coelestis=himmelblau). Coelestin entwickelt meist prismatische oder tafelige Kristalle im Zentimeter-Bereich.
Das Mineral bildete sich im erdgeschichtlichen Zeitalter des Tertiär häufig in Klüften und Hohlräumen von Sedimentgesteinen (Kalksteine, Mergel) zusammen mit Halit, Anhydrit oder Gips.
Coelestin ist nötig zur Herstellung von Farbstoffen, buntem Glas und Elektrobatterien. Als Legierungselement im Stahl wird es zum Beispiel zur Entfernung von Schwefel und Phosphor genutzt und ist ein wichtiges Erz zur Strontiumgewinnung.
While pillar caving it was found also Coelestin. Coelestin is a rare strontium mineral from the mineral class of the sulphates - an anhydrous sulphate without extrinsic anions of the group of barytes. This sulphate can be white, yellow, colorless or blue. Mostly ist’s found in blue tones, where even the name comes from (lat. coelestis = sky blue). Coelestin develops mostly prismatic crystals in the centimetre range. The mineral was formed in the geological age of the Tertiary - often in gaps and hollow cavities of sedimentary rocks (limestones, marls) together with Halit, Anhydrit or gypsum. Coelestin is important for the production of colorings, coloured glass and electric batteries. As an alloying element in the steel it is used for getting off sulphur and phosphorus and it is an important ore for the strontium production.
