Geocache Description:

St Mary, Stoughton:

There are stones in the church which were here when the Saxons were fighting the Danes in nearby Kingley Vale; the chancel arch is either one of the last arches built by the Saxons or one of the first by the Normans. The doorways are 13th century and the tower 14th, and there is a 12th-century window in each transept with pointed arches and well-carved capitals. There is a peal of five bells. A sundial has been added on the Southern wall to mark the millennium.

Stoughton Stumble

When most people arrive at the quiet village of Stoughton they cannot resist walking in the outstandingly beautiful Kingley Vale Nature Reserve.

However, this series takes you up and over the hill on the opposite side of the road, where the views and the woodland are just as spectacular but much quieter.

All the caching is along public tracks and field paths, and hopefully, you will, also be able to enjoy the abundant wildlife and fine views of the South Downs across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

The first half of the route is a bit hilly but one which I find pretty reliable underfoot, even in the really muddy times of the year. However, all of the countryside has its muddy spots so please make sure that you wear appropriate footwear.

This is also a great dog walk with just a couple stiles (currently).

The bonus cache, at the end; a superb county pub where all will find a good welcome for all of the family, including kids and dog

Please remember you will be in the countryside so, please take all your litter home!

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just
ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep
track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
