Notes on the history of and in our village.

Pickering Arms Gable End

"In the year 923AD - King Edward the Elder founded a cyty here and called it Thelwall".

It has been suggested that the name Thelwall may come from the name of King Ethelred who ruled Britain from 866AD to 871AD (E-THEL) making King ETHEL's ancient WALL (THELWALL), which could have been called a 'burgh'. Yet the only requirements for the classification of the 'burgh' were that of a fortified manor house (normally with a moat). This possibly could have been the only building on the site when King Edward arrived in 923AD and one location where it may have stood is that of Thelwall Old Hall which was built in 1618AD as a moat could have been fed from the river which flows behind.. another location could be near by to the now demolished Thelwall Hall on Elizabeth park.

Elizabeth Park to the south is the site of Thelwall Hall, which was demolished in the 1960s.

Hope you enjoy our first cache.
