Geocache Description:

Nice dirt road and good turn around area. Container contains FTF pin, two Nevada State quartes, worry stone, log book and pencil.

My Dad pointed this cement arrow out to me many years ago and said there used to be a beacon there. We did not pay much attention back in those days. I rememeberd my Dad talking about the beacon when we were at Nito929's Beacon 3 cache, it jogged my memory. We hunted this arrow down and had to place a cache here. Maybe Nitro929 has more information on the cement arrow, or the beacon in this valley. This arrow needs a cache, thanks to Nitro929.

Heavy sigh...now, I'm not so sure this was a TAR beacon, and it definitely IS NOT beacon 28...or maybe it is. I found a Coast & Geodetic Survey datasheet that states Beacon 28 is (or was) located at +40° 04.523', -118° 10.891', which is 17.7 miles southwest of this cache. Also, if you look at the San Francisco - to - Salt Lake airway map I posted with my first note, the Transcontinental ran to the east of Rochester (it also shows Reno as being south of Fernley). But, if you look at the attached pic from Google Earth, other beacons line up with the cache. Is the old map right? Are the CGS datasheets right? Did they realign the route at some point?
This cache surely was the site of an airway beacon, but which one? The research continues...

Definitely the former site of another Transcontinental Airmail Route beacon. Many of the beacons were placed on arrow shaped concrete pads...the arrows pointed to the next higher numbered beacon. There should be traces of yellow (or orange) paint on the concrete.
Just a guess, but I'd bet this was the site of Beacon 28. I'm basing this assumption on it's distance from the former locations of Beacons 23 & 24.
You have my permission (as if you need it) to rename this one "Who Turned out the Lights #4".
If anyone ever identifies the location of the beacon near Miriam, I want to know about it...that one's special!
Looks like nvh2ofowler & I will be taking a ride to Oreana pretty soon!

Here's a great little website that provides some basic info on the Transcontinental: (visit link)

We had to add Nitro929 logs to the cache description. They are important to this cache and can not be buried in the first logs. We found beacon 28 east of Rochester, so the question still is WHAT IS THIS
