Geocache Description:

This is a camo'd cache that could be easy or hard.
Located in the newly designated Heritage Site in Grand Pre.

This awesome area deserves attention, when I found out there were no caches here...I started planning some!

The villages of Grand Pre and Hortonville, and the fertile farmlands which surround them, comprise one of the oldest settlement and land use patterns of European origin in Canada. Acadians began settling near Grand Pre in the 1680's. The combined agricultural traditions of the Acadians and the Planters have evolved to create the distinctive rural landscape of todays Grand Pre. Grand Pre has now received recognition through the UNESCO World Heritage Designation.

The Great Upheaval – as the expulsion was called – is a large part of the spectacular Grand Pre National Historic Site. The rebuilt Acadian church has an amazing stained-glass window that, in one glance, shows the burning farms and misery of the Acadian farmers. The church is watched over by sculptor Philippe Hébert’s statue of Evangeline.

However, the Grand Pre exhibit also celebrates the historic cultural landscape, the victory of the original farmers from France who brought with them the old-world skills needed to build dykes and pump out the sea water. The English Planters who came later reaped the benefits of those remarkable systems and improved on them.
