We placed this cache just before Spring arrived. With the arrival of warmer weather there is sure to be days full of caching fun and with that comes bugs, bugs, bugs! With the warmer weather there are sure to be lots of “bees from the hive” out on the trail as well as some of our favorite local insects like “Killerb,” “Ladybug,” and “Butterfly Guy”.
We thought we’d offer some interesting facts about insects to help you appreciate them on the caching trails! Entomology is the study of insects. After reading these facts you will be an official geocaching entomologist!
BUG TRIVIA...
There are over a million species of insects. There are over 90,000 species of insects in North America. Insects outnumber all other animals at a rate of 4 to 1.
Our official state insect of New York is the Ladybug! The Firefly is the state insect of Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
Dragonflies have as many as 30,000 lenses in each eye.
Painted Lady butterflies migrating from Africa to England must travel over 3,000 miles.
The fossil dragonfly, Meganeura, that lived about 250 million years ago was probably the largest insect ever. Its wingspan was over two feet.
The longest insect is the tropical stick insect. It is 13 inches from end to end.
The heaviest living insect is the goliath beetle in Africa (it weighs 1/4 pound and is 5 inches long). They belong to the same family (scarab beetles) as the eastern Hercules beetle, which is about 2 inches long including the horn.
The largest butterfly is the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing from New Guinea (an endangered species), with a wingspan of 11 inches.
The largest moth is the Owlet moth of tropical America, with a wingspan of 18 inches.
The fastest runners are cockroaches, which can move almost a foot per second. However this only translates to a little over 1 mph.
The loudest insects are male cicadas, which can be heard about a quarter of a mile away.
Fleas jump 200 times their body length, which is like a human clearing a 70-story building. Grasshoppers jump 80 times their length, which is like a human jumping 1 1/2 football fields.
The oldest group of insects is the cockroaches, dating back 300 million years.
Each cocoon of a silkworm produces a single thread about 1,500 feet long. More than 25,000 cocoons are needed to make a pound of silk.
The insects with the biggest nests are termites. The largest termite mound, found in Australia was 6.1 meters across the base. The tallest termite mound, found in Africa, was 12.8 meters high, however only 3 meters across.
Springtails and mites have been found at both of the Earth's poles.
In Japan, dragonflies are a symbol of victory on the battlefield.
Bees must collect the nectar from two thousand flowers to make one tablespoonful of honey.
A dragonfly has a lifespan of 24 hours.
Crickets hear through their knees.
Dragonflies are one of the fastest insects, flying 50 to 60 mph.

Now that you are a bug expert, you are ready to seek out this cache!
