Geocache Description:

---------------------------------------------------------------
The Monastery of Santa Croce is located on a small hill near the town of Batignano on the road that leads to the cemetery.

According to tradition, the first stone was laid in 1621 by Giovanni da San Guglielmo who quit the Malavalle Convent, in the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia, to join the order of the Augustinians. He chose the territory of Batignano as his home.

At the beginning of the 1800s, the convent was abolished and converted into a sheet glass factory. Giovanni da San Guglielmo’s casket was transferred to the Church of St. Martin in Batignano.

The complex still has its original perimetric structure and, inside, has an elegant brick cloister. An 18th century mural painting depicts the founding saint in the cloister’s entry portico.

Of the original church, only the apsidal basin, bordered by a triumphal arch, and part of the lateral walls remain.

Currently the monastery is private property and a venue for cultural events.
