Geocache Description:

Produce is cooled and shipped from here.

Imperial Valley is small but the most economically diverse region in California. Agriculture accounts for 48% of all employment in the Imperial Valley.

Vegetable crops comprise only 22% of the total crop land in Imperial County. The total economic impact of vegetable crops to the local community can be estimated at nearly 1.5 billion dollars. The main vegetables grown in Imperial County are iceberg lettuce, leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupes, honeydews, dry bulb onions, processor onions, sweet onions, carrots, sweet corn, spinach, spring mix, asparagus, cabbage and watermelons.

Produce must be cooled as soon as possible after harvest. Rapid, uniform cooling as soon as possible after harvest to remove the field heat, is critical in lowering the respiration rate. This reduces the rate of deterioration and helps provide a longer shelf-life. A one-hour delay in cooling reduces a product's shelf-life by one day. This isn't true for all crops, but is true especially for very highly perishable crops during hot weather.

This location is one of just a few in the valley for cooling and shipping out produce.
