This will take you through parts of Catton Park not used by many folk. It is being left to grow naturally and therefore less stealth may be needed...but shorts and sandals are out :O You have been warned - this is an extremely overgrown area!!!!! DO NOT MOAN BECAUSE OF THE UNDERGROWTH lol
Beware of nettles, brambles, mud and holly in this part, and please try not to disturb too much. There are boundary fences/private fences around the edge. You DO NOT need to go over these, or into private property. Please remain in the park grounds. Please leave cache well covered so others may enjoy it also. Kind thanks go to the Ranger at Catton Park, Matt Caley, for permission to place the caches, and for his guidance. Catton Park is a nationally important green space located to the north of the city of Norwich in the County of Norfolk. Parking can be found at Recreation Ground, just off Spixworth Road - N52 39 6775 E 001 18 0797. Please note no dogs allowed within the Recreation Ground, so alternative parking is also available in the layby outside the school, or opposite the War Memorial. You may start opposite the War Memorial, or alternatively from the gate almost diagonally opposite the Recreation Ground. The cache is a deep lock n close lunchbox, suitable for TBs (a good place to leave generous sized ones!), GCs and SWAG. A pen and logbook are already in the box, as is a certificate for the TFT along with something else ;) and some SWAG. A bit about the park: Now encircled by housing, this green space was once part of a country estate around Catton Hall. As such, it became Humphry Repton's first paid commission to create a country park in the late 1700's. Despite further alterations over 150 years, it remained a country park until the outbreak of World War Two, when the open areas were ploughed up for food production. After the war, the park was broken up and parts were sold off into different ownerships. Subsequent years of focusing on arable farming changed the face of the landscape leaving only the bare bones of Repton's former design. Eventually in 2005 the local community began to implement ambitious restoration and regeneration plans supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This grant is in process of securing the preservation and protection of the parkland for the enjoyment of all who visit and, we hope, for many generations to come. Now the 70 acres of country park offer opportunities for peaceful walks throughout its mixed woodlands of mature oak, sweet chestnut and yew. Within the park can be found many species of exotic conifers like the towering wellingtonias and fine cedars. Inhabiting the trees is a diverse variety of bird life from blue tits and black birds to sparrow hawks, swifts, owls and woodpeckers. Take a stroll up through the open expanse of grassland and you will come across the gnarled veteran trees standing proudly on their own, some almost 500 years old. From the upper part of the park take in Repton’s vista beyond the green canopy to the Norwich cathedral spire surrounded by the urban skyline. The aim is that the Park will be used for quiet recreation by people of all ages in the area. An Education Plan is being prepared to encourage its use by schools and people with a wide range of conservation interests. Only use the clue if you get completly stuck ********Congratulations to Salnrich for FTF*****
