Die Steinheimer Tongruben / The Steinheim clay pits



Tongrube I

Die Steinheimer Tongruben sind Bestandteil des Meteorkrater - Rundwanderwegs Steinheim, der 2009 eingeweiht wurde.
Der Meterorkrater entstand vor ca. 15 Millionen Jahren durch einen Meteoriteneinschlag. Die Größe des Meteors variiert je nach Quelle zwischen 80-240m. Der Krater (Steinheimer Becken) hat einen Durchmesser von ungefähr 3,5km. Die gesamte Länge dieses Rundwegs beträgt 20km, er gehört zum GeoPark Schwäbische Alb.

Am östlichen Kraterrand befinden sich die sog. Tongruben bzw. Tonstiche. Tonminerale entstehen an der Erdoberfläche durch Verwitterung von anderen Mineralen oder Gläsern oder bilden sich neu aus übersättigten Bodenlösungen oder hydrothermalen Wässern. Daher kann Ton im Tagebau abgebaut werden. Tongruben erreichen eine Tiefe von 40-100m.
Ton bezeichnet ein natürlich vorkommendes Material, das sich überwiegend aus feinkörnigen Mineralen zusammensetzt und variable Mengen an Wasser enthalten kann. Ton ist der wichtigste und älteste Rohstoff für die Herstellung von Keramik. Daneben wird er zusammen mit Kalkstein zur Produktion von Zement verwendet. Ton ist heute noch ein wichtiger Rohstoff für z.B. die Herstellung von Schamotten, die für die Innenauskleidung von Öfen in der Stahl- und Glasindustrie benötigt werden. Der weltweite Verbrauch an Ton übersteigt 50 Mio. Tonnen jährlich.
Noch Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts waren in Steinheim Töpferfamilien ansässig, die diese "guten Thone" verarbeiteten.

Um diesen Earthcache loggen zu dürfen musst Du Dich zu den Finalkoordinaten begeben und dort ein Foto von Dir und/oder Deinem GPS-Gerät vor der Tongrube machen.

b) was haben die Steinheimer Hafner vermehrt hergestellt?

The Steinheim clay pits are part of the circular route around the meteor impact crater of Steinheim.
This crater (Steinheim basin) was formed 15 million years ago by the impact of a meteorite of a size between 80-240m. The crater itself has a diameter of around 3,5km. The hiking trail with its total length of 20km was established in 2009 and belongs to the GeoPark Schwäbische Alb (Swabian highlands).

Tongrube I

At the eastern edge of the crater you'll find the Steinheim clay pits. Clay minerals are typically formed over long periods of time by the gradual chemical weathering of rocks by low concentrations of carbonic acid and other diluted solvents. These solvents, usually acidic, migrate through the weathering rock after leaching through upper weathered layers. In addition to the weathering process, some clay minerals are formed by hydrothermal activity. Clay is therefore mined in opencast pits. These pits have an average depth of 40-100m.

Clay is a naturally occurring material composed primarily of fine-grained minerals, which show plasticity through a variable range of water content. Clays sintered in fire were the first form of ceramic. Clay is also used in many industrial processes, such as paper making, cement production and chemical filtering. Until today clay is an important raw material for e.g. the production of firebricks (chamotte) used in ovens for the steel- and glass industry. Worldwide consumption of clay exceeds 50 mio. tons annually.
In the 19th century there were still potter-families living in Steinheim working with the good clay ("gute Thone").

To log this Earthcache you need to go to the final coordinates and make a photo with either yourself and/or your GPS device in front of the clay pit.
