The Raleigh County Airport Pond is stocked with trout by the West
Virginia DNR and is open to children and those with a Class Q
Handicap license. This pond is located beside the Beckley Raleigh
County Memorial Airport, which offers daily airline service to the
Washington Dulles Airport. The airport is named in memory of all
Veterans past, present and future. Located in the circle field,
there is soil from all the counties that we have fought wars in.
You can learn to fly here, sit around and watch airplanes take off
and land, take a charter trip, ride on the airlines, or just go for
a sightseeing flight over beautiful southern West Virginia. During
the spring, summer and fall you will usually see somebody fishing
and enjoying life. There are usually several geese that hang around
the pond, which make for some nice nature pictures. There is also a
restaurant located in the terminal building, which is open to the
public from 7am to 7pm on week days.
This is my first cache hide. I've added a unique problem with
this cache. It has a combination lock on it. To access the
container, you must read the bronze plaque at the base of the flag
pole by the 2 granite memorials to get the combination. The
combination code will be the year that the flag pole was presented
by 4 veterans’ organizations. The cache is located at the
listed coordinates, but the flag pole is 200 yards away - in front
of the terminal building. You can drive to both locations, but why
not get out and walk a little. A few people routinely make the walk
around the airport circle as part of their daily exercise.
