Geocache Description:

Lucy Weston
This is trout fishing heaven, bring a fly rod, your Polaroid glasses and enjoy…

The many nearby lakes have a reputation for good fishing and have been stocked since the 1920’s with trout though we did see some galaxias in the streams and small ponds.
There are several ways of approaching this cache including the Lake Mackenzie route, the Weston Creek Creek route, or the route we sort of used via the Higgs track. The CEyres and co deviated a quite a few times off the track to investigate lakes, trees, rocks and the unfortunate Ragwort flowers as we followed the Higgs track south over the Central Plateau. Lucy Long lake and Weston lake took us four hours to reach from Lady Lake Hut and an hour for the return journey. There is a lot to look at and navigation is easy as the landmarks are distant, obvious and identifiable, the vegetation low and the plateau gently rolling so this was a idyllic journey on a clear day. However low clouds, mist, rain and snow would quickly make the Central Plateau a challenge so be prepared.
Ragwort clumps dotted the heath and we removed flower heads and pulled up this noxious weed. It would be a tragedy if Ragwort were to replace the myriad of flora species in these subalpine areas so visitors may want to bring plastic bags to remove the yellow flower and seed heads.
Cache information. The cache container is the painted 90mm PVC model and the first photo of the CEyrettes is near the cache. Unfortunately the cache does not have fishing based swappies in it, but the swappies will keep kids amused while you wile away the hours. Use the hint if necessary to find the cache.
Personal Warnings.
This cache on the Central Plateau is in an isolated subalpine area with an average altitiude of 1100m +. Be prepared for severe inclement weather at all times of the year and take extreme care if icy conditions are encountered. Take enough provisions to cater for an unexpected overnight stay as the weather can deteriorate with startling suddenness. Have an evacuation plan in case of injury, illness or snake/spider bite. An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is recommended and always tell a responsible person where you are going and your expected time of return.
Leave your backpack on the track if you have to leave it to satisfy curiosity or for toileting needs.
Be careful and be prepared and hopefully you will be rewarded with some of the most amazing sub alpine scenery and mountain lake fishing when you go exploring for the cache “Lucy Weston”.
