The George E. LeStrange Preserve is located at the end of Ralls Rd., off of Selvitz Rd, in Fort Pierce. There is a 1 mile loop trail around a catch & release pond. Boats with electric motors are allowed. The trail is hard packed & suitable for bikes; it is elevated, so it should remain dry. The preserve is open only during daylight hours. Not only will you see tortoises, you'll see their burrows at many cache locations.
Rattlesnakes and Gopher Tortoises are roommates, so please don't disturb their habitat. Remember, the Gopher Tortoise is an endangered species. Unfortunately, people seeking out and destroying rattlesnake nests, also destroy the tortoise burrow. Just remember, the rattlesnake is shy and does NOT want to bite you. It relies on vibrations so that it can leave before you get there. Walking sticks are yours AND the rattlesnake's best friend.
I heard, but did not see peacocks. There's also a clear indication that the preserve is home to wild boar as well.
This cache is just off of the parking lot. You're looking for a camouflaged container.
