Once More Unto the Breach Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Scrudder: This one hasn't been found in a while, but then there aren't any logs for it since the last find either. I hid this cache a few months after my Dad passed from cancer, and it is to him that I credit the idea for this cache. When I was still in school, he came in with a bolt that had a nut welded onto the end, and a lock washer on it. The goal was to get the washer off the bolt without a major effort. Dad loved puzzles and this was one of my favorites that he provided for my Brother and me to solve. Simple put, the bolt was cut in half, the nut was spot welded onto the end that was cut off, so that it would still spin onto the top half of the bolt for a couple of threads in. This made it look like a complete bolt, even though it was in two parts.

This cache hide has provided me with countless emails asking for hints, with opportunities to go and watch others search for it while asking hints. One of my favorite hints to give was, "Let me know when you are tired of screwing around with this cache, and I will let you know that I've already given you a hint." Yeah, this one has been fun.

By the way, I had found this bolt while searching for another style of cache, picked it up and took it home to modify. I found the hole in this railing that was perfect for it, and had to place it here. I could always drive by and see the rail from the road and know that this cache was still in place. I know that had to be a major frustration for all who thought it had gone missing.

It's time to retire this one and let someone else come in with a fun find for everyone. Hopefully it will be a little easier to find and as much fun for all as this one has been.

Geocache Description:

Geocache at the Crosby Rec Center... DO NOT DO THIS ONE AT NIGHT!!!

Kor, Klingon warrior and Dahar Master, is one of those Klingons from the Original Series of Star Trek, who had gone up against Captain Kirk in his younger years. In the Deep Space Nine episode that this geocache is named after, he's an old war hero trying to feel useful again. At the climactic ending of the episode, he does of course save the day, taking command of one single Klingon ship, and facing off against ten enemy warships.

I've been geocaching now for a number of years, and I've seen plenty of changes in this game. I've met a lot of good people ("fellow warriors" if I may be allowed to use the term) and seen a lot of countryside that I would never have known about were it not for this game. It has truly been an adventure.

Now, listening to me, you'd think that I am feeling old and useless, like Kor did. Not useless and feeble, but I have begun to, well, feel my age. This cache is for all geocachers, of every age, as we struggle with the battles that life will deal to us.

And yes, this cache may become a struggle, a thorn in the side, a frustration, for some. For others, it will be a quick P&G two minute stop on the way to the next cache. Well now, that is the nature of geocaching, isn't it?

By now you have noticed that the cache size is not listed, and you've probably even skimmed past the paragraphs above, trying to skip down to some useful information. Regretably, and on purpose, I haven't included any information on what kind of container you are looking for. I can say this, though, that you will feel some sense of victory as you sign your name to the log book.

Because of the location of this cache, please DO NOT SEARCH FOR THIS ONE AT NIGHT!!!! There is an apartment complex very nearby in one direction, with houses in the other direction. There is no need to make the neighbors worry about strangers with flashlights in the parking lot and in the nearby shrubbery. Please do not give them a reason to call the police on you. Besides, it will be easier to hunt for this cache with daylight on your side.

Enjoy the hunt for this one, and don't be surprised if you've found other geocaches just like it. Remember, the word "success" in Klingon is "Qa-pla' ".
