Alp42 - Capitale Douce 2 - Place Jean Marcellin Traditional Cache

Avec ses 45 000 habitants, Gap est la plus grande ville des Alpes du sud et représente un tiers de la population haut-alpine dont elle est la préfecture.

A 750 mètres d’altitude, Gap est entourée de montagnes :
A l’est, la colline de Puymaure puis la montagne de Charance (1903m),
le col Bayard (1246m) et son « V » indiquant le nord aux gapençais,
la colline de Saint-Mens à l’ouest.

Au bord de la Luye, Gap est au milieu d'une nature riche et préservée, au sud-ouest du parc national des Écrins, au sud-est du massif du Dévoluy, à l'ouest du lac de Serre-Ponçon et au nord de la Durance.

Ville romaine connue sous le nom de Vapincum, Gap est riche en histoire.
Mais grâce à ces nombreuses associations sportives, Gap a été élu en 2009 première ville sportive de France.
C’est la capitale douce où il fait bon vivre…

Ce petit circuit dans la vieille ville (globalement à l’intérieur des anciens remparts) va vous faire découvrir les principaux monuments.
Pour une meilleur visite, je vous conseille de faire les caches dans l'ordre en suivant les waypoints intermédiaires numérotés.

It is the « capitale douce » (literraly « sweat capital ») where life is good ...

This small circuit in the old town (generally within the old ramparts) will help you to discover the main monuments.
For a best visit, i advise to to search caches in the recommended order, following additional waypoints.

Au Moyen Age elle s’appelait place Saint-Etienne en raison d’une église édifiée à sa dévotion.
A la révolution, on y planta l’arbre de la liberté et elle s’appela place de l’égalité.
Depuis la fin du XIXème siècle, elle porte le nom du sculpteur Jean Marcellin, né à Gap en 1821. Elève de Rude, il s’illustra à Paris où il mourut en 1884. Quelques-unes de ses œuvres sont conservées au Musée Départemental.
Au n°3 de la place, une plaque rappelle la naissance de Guillaume Farel à Gap en 1489. Il fut l’instigateur de la religion réformée dans la région.
La place Jean Marcellin est le point de convergence des rues du centre ancien et l’emplacement du marché traditionnel du samedi matin.

Si vous avez suivi l'itinéraire indiqué, vous êtes passé par la rue Colonel Roux.
C’est la plus ancienne rue de Gap. C’était déjà la voie décumane, artère principale du camp romain installé vers 14 avant JC, au bord de la voie romaine « Via Cottia per Alpem ». Gap s’appelait alors Vapincum.

In the Middle Ages it was called the Place Saint-Etienne because of a church built at its devotion.
During the revolution, the tree of liberty was planted there and the place named "place de l'égalité" (equality place).
Since the late nineteenth century, it's named of the sculptor Jean Marcellin, born in Gap in 1821. Rude's student, he distinguished himself in Paris where he died in 1884. Some of his works are kept at the County Museum.
At No. 3 of the square, a plaque commemorates the birth of Guillaume Farel at Gap in 1489. He was the instigator of the reformed religion in the region.
Place Jean Marcellin is the focal point of old downtown streets and the location of the traditional market on Saturday morning.

If you've followed the indicated route, you passed through the Colonel Roux street.
It is the oldest street in Gap. It was already the way decuman, the main street of the Roman camp located around 14 BC, near the Roman road « Via Cottia per Alpem ». Gap was called Vapincum.

Vous venez de la cathédrale :
Laissez-là sur votre gauche pour atteindre REF04 où vous descendrez la rue Roubaud.
A REF05 prenez la rue Colonel Roux à gauche.
Passez devant la mairie pour arriver à la cache.

Soyez discret lors de votre recherche et replacez-là bien afin qu'elle soit invisible.

You are coming from "la cathédrale" :
Go to your right to reach REF04 on which you will go down Roubaud street.
At REF05, take Colonel Roux street to your left.
You will passed in front of the city hall before you reach the cache location.

You are looking for a nano cache...
Be discreet while your research and put it back there so it is invisible.

Please note, Saturday is market day on the Place Jean-Marcellin...
