This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ: This cache has now been archived as requested by IDNR. You have 30 days to seek a permit from IDNR and have your cache approved again by your local reviewer. You can find the new policy, the form to apply for a permit, and the step-by-step instructions on what to do to have your cache unarchived at http://www.in.gov/dnr/7488.htm .

Please be sure to read through the new policy so that we can help to publish your cache again as soon as possible. Your local reviewers and Groundspeak are available to answer any questions. You will find at the bottom of this log the email addresses of the Indiana Reviewers as well as a contact at Groundspeak who are happy to help.

Please know that the Indiana reviewers have done everything in their power to keep as many caches as possible on IDNR lands and to make this transition as smooth as possible. They have worked long and hard with the IDNR to come up with a new policy that will work for most cache owners. We are very sorry for any inconvenience the implementation of this permit process may cause.

Geocache Description:

A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding. William Gibson

Constellation Smiley “P” at Atterbury

Constellation Smiley is made up of 19 individual caches. Constellation Smiley “P” is just one shimmering point of light within the whole. When all 19 caches are viewed together from above (See inset map), the individual caches create a terrestrial constellation, specifically a mile wide smiley face. I have taken a look at Geocaching.com, and I believe this is a first of this kind. Each cache is small to regular in size. Please ensure that the lid is screwed on properly. Cache Description: You will be looking for a Gladware container with a screw on lid. It has been camouflaged and has the required cache information on the outside of the container. The cache is hanging several feet off of the ground to avoid flooding and pooling water.

Side Game: Each cache in this series contains a laminated card with a number printed at the bottom of it. When you find each cache, write down the number. The first person to e-mail me bigsarg@comcast.net with all 19 numbers will receive an unactivated Indiana DNR geocoin.

Constellation Smiley is located in the beautiful Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. The Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area was purchased by the state from Camp Atterbury, an army training installation established in 1942. In 1969, wildlife management efforts began on over 6000 acres. The remaining military area, a training facility for the National Guard and Army Reserve units, coordinates with The Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area.

Description of the area: It's big. It's near the Hoosier National Forest. It used to be an army camp. The 35,000 (!) acres next to the area still are in use by the National Guard. The area has mostly flat or rolling lands, with some ravines along Sugar Creek, which has a couple of canoe put-in points. There are some marshes and ponds/lakes; mostly grassland with some small areas (relatively--about 400 acres) of forest. A simple explanation of the area is THORNS, BRIARS, STICKERS, BRAMBLES and things that just poke. Sorry, I forgot the ticks, bees and flies. Bird watching is good here, especially from observation towers near the marshes.

Correctional Cachers: Without any misunderstanding, getting this series out has been a lot of work and has taken a great deal of time. I have registered the caches, but I have only been able to do it with the help of those I cache with, most of us are Correctional Officers and family. It has often occurred to me that caching is very similar to what we do every day at work:
•We need to be very aware of the rules, specifics and dangers in the area.
•We need to be aware of things hidden or camouflaged, and be able to detect those unusual hiding spots.
•We need to work as a team and watch out for each other.
•We always celebrate the good find.
