THE HISTORY OF GEOCACHING

  • May 1, 2000 - President Bill Clinton's executive order to discontinue "Selective Availability" allowing users to receive a non-degraded GPS signal globally was executed.
  • May 2, 2000 - at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the switch controlling "Selective Availability" was thrown. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.
  • May 3, 2000 - Dave Ulmer placed the very first geocache, a five-gallon bucket, in the woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, a slingshot, and the very famous original can of beans aka OCB. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav, and Geocaching was born.
  • November 4, 2000 - Alberta's First geocache (GCA6 - Strathcone Wilderness 1) is placed (2nd cache in Canada) right in our own backyard and the addiction starts to spread at an exponential rate .

Geocaching is 10 years old this weekend. There are events being held around the world April 30th to May 3rd. This event is going to be one of the officially sanctioned "10 Years!" Events. A new icon has been created by Groundspeak for the "10 Years!" Events and everyone who attends this event will earn a find on this unique new icon.

OPTIONAL SIGNUP

I think it would be great if someone had a barbeque (camping grill?) to cook many hotdogs at once. Would need to come setup at 11:40am to get it warmed up and the hotdogs cooking right away. This will especially help those who are popping by during their lunch hour and have to go back to work.

THE EVENT

Bring your stories, travel bugs, etc. but most importantly yourself so we can get a nice group picture at 12:35pm. Should be a nice relaxed lunch time (and afternoon for those wishing to stick around). This event does qualify for the special 10 year icon! Hope to see you there.

THEME

As a tenth anniversary usually has a theme for a unique gift of aluminum, I was thinking that we can all make aluminum hats or other objects to wear for the group photo.

RULES

There are some rules to be followed for us to claim our ‘10 years!’ icon:
  • At least 10 people must attend the event. (should be no problem)
  • A video or picture must be taken at the event.
At least 10 attendees must be in the video/photo along with a legible sign showing the event coordinates and location name.
(I will take care of this)
  • The people in the video or photo should be festive. Be inventive! But please keep it family friendly. (We'll get everyone to make an aluminum hat)

I am hoping many of you can make it out during your "lunch hour" this friday (April 30).
We'll have hotdogs going so you can grab one.
Group photo at 12:35pm SHARP. Please don't be late for it, this is the most important part.

RAIN OR SHINE... SHOW UP! The event must happen, we must have at least 10 people attend, and we'll get that new icon!
