Geocache Description:

On Saturday, May 22nd, Aniyn and Swope2BC will be hosting Grand Forks's first ever event cache. Starting at noon, teams will set out to collect 7 cards from 7 caches hidden throughout Grand Forks, with the best poker hand winning bragging rights (and the largest geocaching trophy you've probably ever seen!). Lunch will follow at the Honeydew Cafe, with results to be announced and prizes to be awarded.

Landsharkz.ca, Cachingcontainers.com and the City of Grand Forks have generously agreed to donate prizes, so there will be something for all teams in attendance.

What is a "poker run" anyway?

The events actually have little to do with poker, beyond using the hand-rankings to score the event. You don't need to know a great deal about poker to take part, other than what constitutes a hand. Essentially a poker run is an excuse to meet up, travel, and have a good time at the stops en route. The most popular poker runs thus far have been motorcycle runs, but the format has spread to boats, planes, bicycles and just about any other form of transport you can think of. Car will probably be your best bet in this case! Each team is given a score card which will be filled in as they progress along the route. At each cache, the participants draw a card. Cards will be sealed in numbered envelopes to insure that each team is only drawing cards from 1 deck (and fair play). The card drawn is recorded on each team's score card, and the winner of the event is the participant who makes the best five card poker hand at the end of the event. Maps will be provided to all teams, along with scorecards/rules and coordinate sheets at the start. Teams will randomly draw their number upon arrival.

Poker Run Rules

* The first thing to stress is that although this is a "run", there are no prizes for speed - it does not matter who is first to complete the course. It is not a race.

* The winning hand is determined by standard poker hand rankings. 5 cards will be used, with the extras picked up along the way being discarded.

*It is the participants' responsibility to check their score sheet before leaving each checkpoint, to ensure that the card they draw is correctly recorded. Cards must be submitted with the scorecard.

*Cards will be dealt, numbered and sealed ahead of time by an independent third party. The organizes will have no knowledge of any cards ahead of time.

*Each team must pick up their own cards. No touching other teams envelopes!

*An 8th card may be purchased by each team at the end of the run by donating a prize. Prizes can be whatever each team decides is appropriate; the only stipulation is you must be willing to include your team's name on the prize! Only one card may be purchased per team.

When confirming your attendance, please make a note of how many people will be in your party. The restaurant needs to know how many places to set and how many staff they will need to book. They would as like us to order in advance if possible, to ensure they have enough produce to cover dinner afterwards as well (you DON'T need to pre-pay or anything like that). I will be emailing you the menu once you log your "will attend".
