Geocache Description:

It's time to celebrate the release of satellites to the general public 10 years ago and along with that, the humble beginning of geocaching. Today is the official anniversary of the first geocache being placed.

The Date: May 3, 2010

The Time: 5:00 to 7:00 pm
(I will be there from 4:30 until 8 pm to accomodate those who can't make the 5-7 time frame.)

The Location: Priest Point Park. In keeping with geocaching being an outdoor activity, this event will be an outdoor event. (if the weather is truly horrid, we'll huddle in the pavilion)

The Food: Bring your own beverages and a snack to share with others - either a pre-dinner apetizer or after-dinner dessert. If you want to grab some "take-out" for dinner on your way to the event, you can eat that as well while visiting.

The Photo: At least 10 happy cachers must be in a group photo to post on this cache page - hopefully someone will offer to help with that. This one will be taken at 6:30 pm. Two other photos will be taken at 5:30 for those who have to leave early and at 7:30 for those who have to arrive late. All will be included.

The Activities: At least 3 new caches in the park along with many others already there. You could even get a group together to go after Payback10.

The History:
May 1, 2000 - an announcement was made that Selective Availability would be lifted.

May 2, 2000 - at approximately midnight, EST Selective Availability lifted and the accuracy of GPS technology was greatly improved.

May 3, 2000 - Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket at N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800, filled with videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a logbook and pencil. He called it the First GPS Stash. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav.

Within three days two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was born!

Stay tuned for late breaking news!

The time: Need me to be there a earlier or later than the posted times? I'll be glad to accomodate you. Just write me a message with the details.
