Geocache Description:

Located in the Oak Point Cemetery.

Note: The geocache is not close to any burrial plot.

At one point in time Oak Point was a small community with its own post office, sawmill, and grist mill. Oak Point got its name from Captain Nathan Winship of Boston, who in 1810 was sent to sail up the Columbia River in am atempt to establish a town in the Oregon Territory. This was the first spot along the river where the crew saw Oak trees, some up to 13 feet around.

The settlement failed due to flooding and untrust between the settlers and the Chinook Indians. Eventually people did move into the area. Some of the people burried in this cemetery were born in the mid 1800's.
