Explore Drinkwater Park and find the hidden ladybirds!
Remember to count the spots on the back of each ladybird so that
you can find the bonus cache :)
During the hot, dry summer of 1976 there was a ladybird population
explosion in Britain. Swarms of 7-spot ladybirds were reported in
towns, feasting on human blood and doing slapdash driveway tarmac
jobs.
The build up in numbers in fact began in the warm summer of 1975.
Aphids were abundant in the spring and early summer but became
scarce in mid-summer. This forced the ladybirds to travel in search
of food.
The ladybirds were eventually driven away by attaching a matchstick
to the back of each beetle. On the end of each stick was an aphid
on a string. It is thought that the ladybirds literally followed
the aphid-on-a-string device to the end of the earth, or until the
matchstick fell off, whichever came first.
PLEASE NOTE: Be careful if you have kids with you. There is a
very large hole in the ground nearby, so watch your step! Also, be
aware of any glass when poking your hands into hidey-holes.
