Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of internationally placed caches to honour renowned mountaineer Conrad Kain.

About this Cache Area...

Although he was a living legend among his climbing contemporaries, it appears many locals were only vaguely aware of Conrad Kain’s esoteric occupation as mountain guide.

In obituary notices published by the Cranbrook Courier, on his death, Conrad Kain was variously referred to as “the well known Hungarian guide,” and “the first of the Swiss guides brought to this country by the ACC.” And even though one of the obituaries states that he “…expressly wished that his remains be buried beside that of this late life partner (Hetta),” who was interred in the Roman Catholic section of the Cranbrook graveyard, Conrad Kain somehow found his way to a final resting place over 100 meters away in the “commoners” section.

However, thanks to the loyalty of his old rope and saddle partner J. Monroe Thorington and a number of other friends, his epitaph was mounted on a headstone aptly made from his favourite climbing medium, a lovely block of granite.

The published coordinates are for a suggested parking place as you find the information needed to locate the cache container.
