Geocache Description:

A lovely ramble in the beautiful area of Thorncombe Woods.

A cache in the lovely Thorncombe Woods, adjacent to Thomas Hardys Cottage. The area is a haven for wildlife, just check the boards in the car park for recent sitings.

Car parking is available at N50 43.681 W002 23.425
Parking is free but a £1 donation is appreciated, an honesty box is located by the notice boards.

The terrain is fairly good but does have several steep inclines. Therefore access with a wheelchair is limited but a sturdy buggy that can fit through a kissing gate would be fine. In wet weather the area becomes muddy but is generally passable.

This cache has been placed with the kind permission of Dorset County Council Ranger Service.

You are looking for a small Klip-Lok box. It contains a logbook and pencil, and several tradable items. Please replace the cache carefully so that it is adequately concealed. Please not, the cache is not located on Forestry Commision land.

From the car park the easiest route is via the furthest path (with the fire gate) though all roads do lead to Rome eventually! Follow this round and take one of the 3 kissing gates on the right. The second gate will take you up the newly cleared Roman road, turn and take a look at the top as it is quite impressive! Follow the paths up until you reach your destination. In summer GPS reception may fluctuate but there are plenty of open areas to get it back.

The area is dog friendly and good fun for reasonably sturdy children. We have walked here for years with no problems but it is wiser to keep dogs out of the heathland area in sunny conditions as there are sometimes adders basking. Also heed the signs at certain times of the year to protect heathland nesting birds.
