Geocache Description:

Highland Cemetery (listed on some maps as Fellows Cemetery or Lower Highlands Cemetery). Several hundred drivers pass with a few feet of this cemetery every day and probably don't even notice it is there.

Please be very respectful of the cemetery, as this is a very old, historic location. Be careful where you tred. The center of the cemetery appears to be unused, and you can use this area to walk to the cache, which is located in the rear and to the side of the cemetery, near the fenceline. The cache container is small, covered with cammo tape and holds only a log book.

This cemetery is located on about an acre of land that was donated by Hiram Fellows in 1860. Four of Hiram’s sons are buried here: Orlando, Joseph, Eli and Daniel. The cemetery is partially fenced, is still in use and currently holds about 195 graves. The cemetery is still owned by Hiram’s heirs.

The Lower Highland Church was built across the road from the cemetery in 1878 or 1879 but it was removed in 1955.

Below are listed some of the individuals who are buried here: William Beeson (1832-1907), Hiram Fellows, (1825-1899), J. Nelson Harrington, (1812-1870), Mary Imel (1810-1892), J.H. Jones (1821-1904), Thomas J Kirk (1836-1927), William Rutherford Sr (1832-1922), J W Wallace (1817-1903), George Welch (1818-1897), Samuel White (1829-1914).
