The Black Wood of
Rannoch is one of the last remnants of the vast Caledonian Forest.
It is also now a Special Area of Conservation, protected for the
many special plants and animals that live there. Careful visitors
will see deer and red squirrels. Still as church mice ones, towards
the end of the day, may even see pine marten.

However, some of the most remarkable creatures are also among the
smallest. There are various species of wood ant in Scotland.
Formica aquilonia loves the mix hereabouts of pine and old birch
woodland, the balance of trees and sunny glades. As a result wood
ant colonies abound, with some of the largest nests you will see;
great dome shaped piles of pine needles, twigs and bark. You may
well see some on the way to the cache.
