Geocache Description:

This cache series is along the main trail in Mount Pope Provincial Park, north of Fort St. James. Cache is a 1L water bottle.

Mount Pope Provincial Park is a haven for many types of wildlife including mountain chickadees, deer and black bears. The trail starts in a Douglas-fir forest and ascends to a subalpine rocky summit with fantastic panoramic views. While this park is relatively new, only having been established in 2001, it has a long rich history starting with the Carrier First Nation. The Mountain is named for Major Pope who spent the night alone on the mountain in 1865 after being separated from his telegraph surveying party. The trail is 6.5 km one way (13 km return) and ascends 760 m. The trail is quite steep in many places making the hike very strenuous and not suitable for everyone. There are no facilities in this park so be prepared (this is bear country) and bring lots of drinking water. Be aware that there are some steep cliffs—no bushwacking is required. The hike averages 4 hours 10 minutes one way and overnight camping is prohibited so plan your day accordingly. For more information visit www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkspgs/mt_pope
