Kiama Harbour is situated 120km south of Sydney on the Australian east coast. It was officially opened in September, 1876 after 16 years of construction to cater for the increasing shipping trade to the town.
Iron rings, originally used to moor ships and boats in the harbour can still be seen attached to rocks. The area surrounding the harbour is known as Robertson Basin.
Kiama’s quarries produced basalt gravel and large quantities were shipped away to Sydney for tramway and railway construction. The quarries still operate, turning out rail ballast and road base for New South Wales transport needs.
Kiama Harbour is now used only by fishing boats, sail boats, and the occasional cruse boat, with the town now being a beautiful tourist haven.
