Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden at the CrossRoads Heritage Center. It is free and accessible to the public 24/7. You can park at the Welcome Center lot and walk a short distance on a wood-chip path to the cache location which provides a beautiful panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley to the East.

The Director of the Heritage Center gave permission for this cache and has informed volunteer workers at the center about the cache. So you don’t need to fear walking around and exploring this site. You are welcome here anytime.

Before you leave, be sure to see the white one-room school building at the top of the hill. If you happen to come when it is closed be sure to look in the windows to see how a school functioned in the old days.

The name of this cache is not a comment about the historical location. Rather, it is in reference to how the cache is hidden. This cache combines two of my favorite hobbies- Geocaching and Birding. When you try to access the cache, don’t worry that you might disturb nesting birds. I designed and built this hiding place in such a way that both birds and geocachers can enjoy it safely. This is an ideal cache for families with kids. ENJOY.

Note about access: On a few occasions (during nearby football games) there may be a cable across the driveway. The cable is not locked, you are welcome to unhook it and drive into the center. The local high school requested the cable to discourage parking there during games.

See this website for more information about the CrossRoads Heritage Center: (visit link)

The CrossRoads (Valley Brethren-Mennonite) Heritage Center features exhibits and a video on the settling of the Shenandoah Valley by the Brethren and Mennonites – in pioneer days, Civil War times, and in early 1900 school and mission work in the mountains of western Virginia.

Interpretative guides tell stories in the 1854 Burkholder-Myers House, the nearby Wash House, the Blacksmith Shop, and the 1904 Whitmer School/Cove church, all furnished with period furniture. The tours are available for a voluntary donation. You can also explore the exhibits in the Welcome Center.

The original contents included: A really nice trackable geocoin (uninitiated) for the FTF, 3 keychains, 2 mini sharpie pens, flashlight, ornament, and a Logbook and pencil. Coins from Bulgaria, El Salvadore, Jamaica, Haiti, British pound, Euro, Italy, Turkey
