Demons Don't Dream is named for the sixteenth book of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. Xanth is a place where "appearance counts for most of reality" and nearly everyone has some magical talent, even if it is only the ability to change the color of popcorn. Bubbles the dog would like this cache. For dogs who keep logs.
Playing the new fantasy/adventure computer game Companions of Xanth, Mundan teenager Dug selects a companion from among the characters of Xanth, Dug choosing a sultry half-woman/half serpent, Nada Naga, he has to play through the game to find the key and win the prize, a magic talent. Kim is another Mundane playing the harmless-looking computer game with Xanth Companion Bubbles—a dog she found in a bubble—Sammy Cat, and Jenny Elf (her companion), who discovers her favorite fantasy realm has suddenly become frighteningly real.
Soon Dug and Kim meet and find they have entered the actual Land of Xanth. Unknown to them, the demons that provide Xanth's magic are in mystic competition, using Kim, Dug and their companions as pawns. In a desperate race against time, Dug and Kim battle their way across the wondrous, perilous land of Xanth, testing their courage against dozens of fearsome obstacles and their wits against a host of outrageous puns! But when treachery, danger, and deceit place Xanth itself in peril, Dug and Kim learn that some things are more important than winning or losing.
