This
letterbox-hybrid cache is dedicated to the reminiscence and
admiration of Roseville’s early dwellers. It is part of
a series of caches called: “CACHE OUT IN
ROSEVILLE”
In California in
the 1920’s, clever drink stands began to pop up, shaped like
a giant orange. They had a door and windows from which to
sell refreshments. Roseville was one of many cities that had
one of these stands. It was located on the west side of
Riverside Avenue at 5th Street. The Riverside area
at that time was called Automotive Row because the street
was filled with automobile dealerships. This street was part
of Route 40 – America’s “Golden Highway”
– connecting New Jersey to San Francisco. The
GIANT ORANGE
(as they were known
throughout California) existed thru the state up until the
1970’s. The Roseville stand was demolished in the
1950’s. Some of them still exist today in
backyards throughout the land and can be seen on the web.
Riverside Avenue recently received a facelift with new sidewalks,
seating, crosswalk features, improved landscaping, architectural
accents, gateway arches, and awesome signs telling the history of
Old Roseville. One of those signs features
Roseville’s GIANT ORANGE.
This is a Letterbox-Hybrid
cache. Please bring your own stamp to stamp in the
GIANT ORANGE log
book.
And of course, bring your own book in which to stamp the
GIANT ORANGE stamp for
your collection. Best place to park is on
5th Street, adjacent to the original location of
Roseville’s GIANT
ORANGE.
Instructions to find the
Letterbox-Hybrid Cache:
·
After parking, walk to the
coordinates listed on the cache page. You will find
yourself at one of the new seating features on the street.
You will be situated between Hayes Auto Sales on both
blocks.
·
Cross the street, heading
north. Continue on until you come to the GIANT ORANGE sign. Admire the new sign
and try not to get too thirsty.
·
Opposite the sign – on the
Hayes Auto Sales property – is a mortar flowerbox of
shrubs. The cache is located within the bushes –more
toward the car dealership, rather than the street. Hayes Auto
Sales knows about the cache and has given their permission for it
to be placed there – thanks, Lisa! Please replace
so that it will not get muggled. ENJOY!
