Moody Gulch Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cats Out Walking: Sure enough, the area has been posted 'keep out', so will have to abide by the owner's wishes.

There are a few new survey markers in the area, which may indicate some development effort. Not at all sure, yet the short hike to the cache is no longer possible.

I've retrieved cache box and will look for a new home for it shortly. In the meantime, this one has run its course.

Geocache Description:

Simple woodland hide. Stay left.

A short hike along the creek within Moody Gulch. Highway 17 has a curve referred to as 'Moody Curve' - this is the gulch that causes the curve.

There is parking for one car on the outside of the curve on Old Santa Cruz Highway. This parking spot can get muddy in the wet season. As you face the gz from the road - start on the left side of the creek. No need to be near the creek itself.

A short hike up a trail along the creek (some logging/brush clearing has occurred so parts of the trail has obstacles).

We noticed on a topo map indicators for 'oil well' - not seeing any we did a quick online search. We found this on a ca.gov site

"By 1880, although a number of wells had been drilled in Pico and Wiley Canyons near Newhall, the great- est interest focused at Moody Gulch in Santa Clara County. Moody Gulch wells were from 800 to 1,600 feet deep, and some initially produced up to 100 barrels of oil a day. However the production from these wells declined rapidly. Soon, prospects at Moody Gulch looked poor and interest returned to canyons near Newhall, where increased drilling raised the area’s oil production to about 500 barrels a day." (visit link)

Recently ran into a discussion of the local oil exploration history at (visit link)

The cache is a small tupperware container in typical woodland hide. And, let us know if you find any evidence of the old wells. (also watch your step)
