[ENG] Roja is an old port, and a center of fishery and trading. Even the ancient Vikings used it for sailing. So called Devils Boats (Velna laivas) – a pile of stones near Bilava (GC1V6BE), Lube etc can be considered as an evidence for that. For the first time Roja in writings appeared in 1387. In the 17th and 18th centuries 116 ships were built in Roja and the nearest villages. In the beginning of 20th century there were 26 sailing ships launched. Traditions aren’t forgotten – in Celtnieku Str. 5 you can see a collection of sailing ship models which are made by L. Veidemanis. At the end of Joma Str. the Grand Stone of Roja (Rojas dižakmens) lies in the sea.
