Geocache Description:

This is the 6th in a series of caches that are based on places that have colours in its name. These can all be found on the 1:25,000 OS maps of Cornwall.

Golden and Golden Mill is an area that lies halfway between Grampound and Tregony, and is surrounded by the Trewithen estate.
The area consists of Golden Manor which is a beautiful property that pre-dates the early 1500s. Around 1577 it was owned by a Francis Tregion, and he was found to be sheltering a young Roman Catholic priest, Cuthbert Mayne. Cuthbert was hanged, drawn and quartered at Launceston and one of the "quarters" was put on display at Tregony. His head decorated the gates of Launceston Castle for a while, and part of the skull was preserved at Lanherne as a holy relic. Eventually, in 1974, about 400 years later, Cuthbert Mayne was canonised by the Roman Catholic church.

A few yards down the road, and on the opposite side, is a most intriguing building. It is an ancient cowshed known as Golden Barn, it has a sundial and most of the external features you would expect of a medieval chapel. It is labled "Chapel" on the OS maps. Aparently there is a spiral staircase inside and is likely to have had an oratory on the upper floor.
Pictures of the Manor and the Barn - see below.

Further down the hill and before you cross the river Fal you will pass Golden Mill. There is no sign of a water wheel now, but Golden Mill was certainly working by early Tudor times because a bond was lodged during Henry VIII's reign, for the building of a weir to improve its performance.

There is plenty of parking on the left after you have crossed the bridge.
The published co-ords are for the micro pot that contains the co-ords for the final cache which is a round, camo lock & lock container. It is a level flat walk to the cache, following the river Fal.
