West of where the Guadalupe River Trail meets the San Francisco Bay Trail an almost unmarked path leads off towards the bay. This path goes along and across an active rail line (watch out!) and ends at a former salt pond that’s now part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
To reach the trail from the parking area, cross Gold Street at the south trailhead of the river trail and continue west towards the tracks. This is a gravel paved road with a gate to block large vehicular traffic. Continue to the tracks and go south, parallel to them for a few hundred feet, to the railway crossing.
After crossing the tracks follow the dirt road. This heads north parallel to the tracks for 300 feet then turns west to the bay. The fenced-off PG&E/Sprint property next to the road is marked as a burrowing owl habitat. The cache is NOT beyond the fence. Initial stock includes a lucky cat and some coins
Because of terrain and the active UPRR tracks this is not a cache recommended for small children. Motor vehicles are not allowed, but bikes are permitted. The parking area recommended is at the Alviso Educational Center of the Santa Clara Valley Water District, where there are picnic tables, restrooms and informative displays.
Congratulations to BearTerritory for FTF
