The old Mervyn's Plaza mall in Santa Clara started life as the
home of a W. T. Grant Co. store. Back in the day, Grant's was a
nationwide chain of mid-priced stores somewhere between Sears' and
Woolworth's in quality of offerings. The Santa Clara store was
quite large and even featured a restaurant.
When the Grant Co. went bankrupt in the mid-1970's the store
space was taken over by Mervyn's of San Lorenzo, just up the Bay.
Mervyn's eventually expanded nationwide but after a succession of
owners, it too went bankrupt in December 2008. Since then the space
has sat empty and shopping center is slated for redevelopment.
Be careful in approaching GZ at certain times of the day. You'll
be in full view of the customers of both the drugstore and the
restaurant. This is also a test of your GPSr skills as satellite
signals are shadowed by the concrete walls and steel awning.
Cache may be reached from paved sidewalk. There is no need to
trample plants or open electrical boxes. It is non-magnetic and may
be partly concealed by pipes, bark, leaves, roots, etc. Restaurant
hours are 6 AM-9 PM most days, with breakfast and lunch the busiest
periods. You may wish to plan your visit accordingly.
