Geocache Description:

Practically a drive up. Small camo'd peanut butter jar. Contains FTF certificate and trade goods.

Across the prairies, nearly every small farming community boasted a cathedral of sorts. From miles away, they dominated the local skyline, emblazoned with the town’s name. Grain elevators, numbering in the thousands, dotted the countryside. Their goal was to get the farmer’s grain into a rail car for shipment around the world. In the 1930’s, it was reported that there were over 5700 grain elevators in western Canada, referred to as the Breadbasket of the World.

The grain elevator was a vertical storage warehouse that used gravity to fill the waiting grain cars. A series of scoops, attached to an endless belt carried the grain up into storage bins, giving it the “elevator” designation.

Sadly, with the passage of time, and the centralization of massive concrete elevators, the classic wooden construction is no longer favored, and are falling into disrepair or being demolished.

This cache is a small tribute to those iconic sentinels that once blanketed the prairies.

Congrats Oakbank24 on your first-ever FTF!
