Carmens Kayak Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

New York Admin: First and foremost let me apologize to Coffeebiker, the geocaching community and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for publishing this cache. As I was reviewing the recent cache move I noticed this cache to be in Wertmein National Wildlife Area. The US Fish and Wildlife Service does not permit geocaching on their properties. As such this cache should not have been published in Wertmein. Unfortunately I must archive this cache and ask you remove it as soon as possible.

Geocache Description:

This cache is only accesible by canoe or kayak. It is on the Carmens River. It is a little over a half mile paddle one way from the launch site @ Montauk highway. It should be an easy paddle roundtrip even for a novice. This is a micro with just a log so bring a pen that can write on Tyvek. Please do not attempt to reach this on foot from the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. Although it may be possible, it is probably dangerous!

Welcome to the Carmens River! This is an absolutely beautiful spot to canoe or kayak. The launch site used be Glacier Bay Sports, but they have since gone under. The town bought the property and it is a pulic launch site now albiet unmarked. The building is still there and so is the parking and the dock. The launch site is very shallow, maybe 6-12 inches of water. Perfect for all you beginners. You will need to bring or rent a boat. Take the river South about a half mile or so past the Werthiem National Wildlife refuge sign.

There are no power boats here. Just canoe, kayak and small electric row boats and such.

The river goes South and out into Bellport Bay. There is a kayak landing about 1 1/2 miles past the cache called Indian Landing. You can land here and hike the short hiking trail in the preserve. Remember to tie your boat.

Cache should be accesible in any tide. Please remember this is a huge waterfowl area, and we are just visitors to their home!
You're likely to see ducks, geese, Egrets, Osprey and others just to name a few. Swans can be nasty especially around spring when they are breeding. Please don't mess with them. Respect all wildlife.

Although the Carmens River is very shallow in spots please remember to boat safely. Wear a lifevest. Bring a signal whistle and a paddle float if you have a sit in kayak. A hand bilge pump is a good idea too. Good luck finding this very unique cache.
