Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a rural area south of Richmond that was once called Ranzau. It will have an extra significance for our German visitors.

Fedor Kelling arrived in New Zealand on board the "Skjold" ("Skiold") on 1 September 1844.He wrote back home, "That in New Zealand every man could be his own King on his own land. He could be independent and free".

He established a farm and settlement south of Nelson and named both Ranzau. A school and road have retained the name. The co-ordinates will take you to a small reserve that was once a part of that farm. He helped many settlers, regardless of nationality, to get a fresh start in New Zealand.

Kelling was one of the areas most influencial pioneers. He established the Nelson Agricultural Association, served on the Waimea Road Board and Central Board of Education, was a member of the Nelson Provincial Council for Waimea West when New Zealand had Provincial governments, first suggested a rail link between Nelson and the West Coast and was a driving force behind the early railroad, was the main financial contributer to the building of the Ranzau Lutheran Church (GCK098), was appointed German Consul to New Zealand and was awarded The Order of the Crown of Prussia for his service

The cache is a large camo-painted snap lock container with lots of "goodies" for trading. Because of location, would be best for daylight hour only.
PLEASE: Cover cache as was found

Have fun!
