Short hike to a nice vista near Ohlstadt, 1.5h both ways, 200m elevation gain.

Über Ohlstadt auf knapp über 900m erhebt sich ein Felssporn, die "Veste". Hier soll schon ab dem 5. Jhdt. eine Burg gewesen sein; 1414 wird sie 11 Wochen lang belagert und dann zerstört, wobei eine neue Erfindung zum Einsatz kommt, nämlich zwei Kanonen. In den Ruinen läßt sich der Straßenräuber Schneeberger mit seinen Gesellen nieder, und überfällt vorbeiziehende Händler. Er wird von den Murnauern gefangen genommen und geköpft, wovon noch eine schriftliche Überlieferung exisitiert:
"...das die von Murnauw des reichs veint gevangen haben genannt der Schneeberger selb siebender zwischen Aw vnd Eschenloch und geführt gen Murnaw in frohnvest vnd da zu Murnaw über all sieben recht ergehn lassen und gericht mit dem Schwert" (nach: Sagen und Legenden um Werdenfelser Land und Pfaffenwinkel, Gisela Schinzel-Penth, Ambro Lacus Buch- und Bildverlag 2008)
Gefunden wird oberhalb der Veste 1984 tatsächlich ein goldenes Amulett aus dem Mittelalter. Vielleicht hatte es einst der Schneeberger verloren?
Da gehen wir mal hin. Vom Parkplatz P1 der Beschilderung "Veste" folgen. Direkt am Felsen angekommen geht man diesen senkrecht hoch, falls man Seil und Kletterausrüstung dabei hat. Alle anderen folgen dem Weg am Felsen entlang im Uhrzeigersinn und nehmen den Pfad mit Stufen nach oben. Oben auf dem Plateau warten zwei Bänke zur Rast. Hier hat man eine prächtige Aussicht Richtung Ohlstadt, Murnauer Moos, und Richtung Heimgarten. Rundherum geht es senkrecht nach unten. Von der Burganlage sieht man nur noch einige tiefe Löcher, in die man nicht hineinfällt, solange man hinter dem Stacheldraht bleibt. Eine Sage erzählt, dass von hier ein unterirdischer Gang bis nach Weichs führt....
Der cache liegt nicht hier oben. Von Ohlstadt kommend, zweigt ca 50m vor dem Felsen ein Pfad nach rechts ab, dem man in Richtung der Koordinaten folgt. Wegen des dichten Waldes und der Nähe des Felsens sind die Koordinaten ungenau, benutzt daher das Spoilerbild!

Fifteen hundred years ago the first castle stood on top of a steep rock near Ohlstadt. In the year 1414 the castle was assaulted for 11 weeks, and it was destroyed with the help of a new invention, i.e. with two canons. The brigand chief Schneeberger used the ruins as a stronghold. He ambushed merchants on the road the West, which was then a major road between Munich and Italy. He was caught rather quickly by soldiers from Murnau, and later he and his band were beheaded. Today the rock still bears the name "Veste" (which means "stronghold"). In 1984 a golden amulet was discovered near the rock, maybe it once was in the possession of the brigand chief Schneeberger?
To visit the place, park your car at P1 and take the road uphill, always following the sign "Veste". When you arrive at the base of the rock, just climb vertically uphill, in case you brought rope and rock climbing equipment. All others use the small path clockwise around the rock. Stairs will bring you to the plateau on the top. Two benches await you here to take a rest, and you will have a beautiful vista towards the West. Hardly any remains of the stronghold can be found here, except for some very deep holes in the ground which are fenced in with barbed wire. Some old sagas have it that once an underground tunnel led from here to the road in the West, approximately where today you see the autobahn A95....
The cache is not on the top of the rock. When you came here you may have noticed a small path diverting to the right approximately 50m before you reached the base of the rock. Follow this path and then use the spoiler picture to locate the cache
