Im Rosenheimer Becken, das sich aus dem abschmelzenden Inn-Gletscher am Ende der Würm-Eiszeit bildete, findet man Drumlins nordwestlich von Tuntenhausen.

Drumlins (aus dem Gaelischen „druim“ für „Rücken“ oder „Höhenrücken“) sind längliche Hügel von tropfenförmigem Grundriss, deren Längsachse in der Eisbewegungsrichtung eines eiszeitlichen Gletschers liegt. Die stromlinienförmigen Körper wurden unter einem sich aktiv bewegenden Gletscher geformt. Dabei liegt das stumpfe Ende immer in Richtung des Gletschers. Sie sind Bestandteil der Grundmoränenlandschaft. Drumlins können bis zu 45 Meter hoch und einige hundert Meter lang sein. Sie treten immer gesellig auf und sind mit großer Regelmäßigkeit wechselständig angeordnet. Da sie häufig in großer Zahl auftreten, spricht man von Drumlin–A.

A drumlin (derived from the Gaelic word “druim” - rounded hill or mound) - is an elongated whale-shaped hill formed by glacial ice acting on underlying unconsolidated till or ground moraine. Its long axis is parallel with the movement of the ice, with the blunter end facing into the glacial movement. Drumlins may be more than 45 m (150 ft) high and more than 0.8 km (½ mile) long. Drumlins are typically aligned parallel to one another, usually clustered together in numbers reaching the hundreds or even thousands – this is called a drumlin-A.

Es existieren verschiedene Theorien über die exakte Entstehung und eine Reihe von unterschiedlichen Meinungen unter den Geologen, die sich mit Geomorphologie beschäftigen. Einige sehen einen direkten Zusammenhang mit der Formung durch das Eis, da seit den 80er Jahren eine Theorie von John Shaw eine Gestaltung durch fließendes Wasser unter dem hohen Druck des Gletschereises postuliert. Wie auch immer, es ist immer noch nicht ausreichend verstanden, warum drumlins in bestimmten Gebieten gebildet wurden und in anderen nicht. Sie sind oft verbunden mit Moränen.

There are many theories as to the exact mode of origin and plenty of controversy among geologists interested in geomorphology. Some consider them a direct formation of the ice, while a theory proposed since the 1980s by John Shaw and others postulates creation by a catastrophic flooding release of highly pressurized water flowing underneath the glacial ice. Either way, they are thought to be a waveform (similar to ripples of sand at the bottom of a stream). It is also poorly understood why drumlins form in some glaciated areas and not in others. They are often associated with ribbed moraines.

In Europa finden sich Drumlins rund um den Bodensee sowie nördlich der Alpenkette. Das schönste Drumlingebiet in Oberbayern befindet sich zwischen Ammersee und Starnberger See und heißt: =B

In Europe you found drumlins around Lake Constance north of the Alps. The most beautiful drumlin area in Upper Bavaria is located between Ammersee and Lake Starnberg and is called =B.
