Geocache Description:

After the success of our previous series of caches in Sandwell Valley, we thought it would be a good idea to set up a series in Brum. As you may know Birmingham is made up of small districts known as Quarters, so we came up with a plan to place a cache in each Quarter:

The Jewellery Quarter
The Gun Quarter
The Irish Quarter
The Chinese Quarter
The Convention Quarter
The Millennium Quarter
The Business Quarter

The Irish Quarter

Modern-day Digbeth is currently dominated by old industrial buildings and the blue-brick Victorian railway viaduct. The area is undergoing a large redevelopment scheme that will regenerate the old industrial buildings into apartments, retail premises, offices and arts facilities. There is still however much industrial activity in the south of the area.

Digbeth has very close links with the Irish community of Birmingham. The traditional St Patrick's Day parade is held in and around Digbeth, usually attracting crowds at times estimated to be one hundred thousand strong, making it the largest in the country.

Work to the nearby Custard Factory in Gibb Street has already seen the renovation of a number of buildings. The genesis of the Custard Factory is a love story. The wife of nineteenth century industrial chemist Alfred Bird was allergic to eggs: a tragic state of affairs because she loved puddings. Alfred devoted himself to making egg-free delicacies and came up with Custard Powder in 1837. Soon a favourite dessert up and down the nation, it even fed the British armed forces in the Boer, First and Second World Wars.

This is an unusual cache which blends in well with it's surroundings and is positioned nearby The Custard Factory and The Old Crown Pub, which dates back to 1368 making it the oldest Tudor public house in Birmingham.

There is only a log inside this cache so please bring a pen with you. Please replace the cache carefully to avoid it getting muggled.

There is a car park near GZ and the cache can easily be retrieved 24/7.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS CACHE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN TO RETRIEVE AS THERE ARE SHARP OBJECTS SURROUNDING IT. YOU DO NOT NEED TO REACH INSIDE THE "WALL" TO RETRIEVE THIS CACHE.
