Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches placed at Mitchell Field in Harpswell. Mitchell Field is a wonderful public facility open from 8:00am to dusk every day. It includes a 1.5 paved loop trail that will take you from the parking area down to the water and back up along a stand of pine trees to the parking area. You can bike or walk the trail. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

The views are spectacular from the shore line. There are picnic tables near the water as well as a small beach. Bring a lunch and a camera and stay awhile. This series is designed to get you to walk or bike the whole 1.5 mile loop. If you have more time there is another trail through the woods where you can find another cache called Tank Farm (GC9E64) placed by Team Chucky Cheese.

Caches: Are all micros. They are not all in the same type of container. All of the caches have a log. Some of the containers have pencils some do not. BYOP.

Sorry no FTF prizes in this series. The size of the containers also limits the amount of swag and TBs that can be placed. This series is about getting some relatively low impact exercise in a beautiful place.

All of the caches are fairly straight forward hides and should not present any real challenges.

Location: Mitchell Field is located off of 123(near 1410 Harpswell Road). There is a gate and a parking area just off the road. The gate is usually not open. Park outside the gate and you can walk through the pedestrian entrance.

Information about the facility:

Mitchell Field is a 119.3-acre coastal site with deep-water pier and dock including 2,630 feet of prime shoreline on Middle Bay. Approximately 40 acres are heavily wooded, the remainder of the property is open space. The site has underground electric and communications conduits, 16 Buildings (including 400’ pier & elevated water tank), approximately 2 miles of paved road and approximately .75 miles of dirt road.

The site was commissioned in 1954 It was operated as a U.S. Navy Fuel Depot to supply fuel to the Brunswick Naval Air Station. In 1991, the Navy determined that it would be more economical to truck in fuel from Searsport and, on March 31, 1992, officially shut down the facility.

The Town acquired the property in 2001 from the Federal Government after the Fuel Depot closed in 1992 and the property was remediated. The housing area was transferred to the Town in 2004
