Between 1943 and August 1944 the German Army constructed a line of defence stretching from the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian Sea as a last bulwark to safeguard Northern Italy from invasion. It was called The Gothic Line or Linea Gottica.
The approach to this cache gives you the opportunity to explore a small example of the defences still preserved in the Serchio Valley.
From the main Lucca to Borgo a Mozzano road take the turn-off signed to Valdottavo at the roundabout. Take the first left signed to Domazzano and San Donato and also to the Linea Gottica. After the church of San Donato you will see a small left turn just infront of a little roadside chapel. This narrow road is also signed to the Linea Gottica. You can park here or follow the road up to co-ordinates N43 56.131 E 010 29.400 where there is parking for one car.
From this parking spot follow the main track round to the right and uphill. Just in front of the wooden Linea Gottica signboard turn left and go uphill on a rocky trail until you reach the bunker, trenches and gun emplacement. The cache is just a little further on. If your GPS takes you directly uphill from the parking co-ordinates then once you have found the cache walk a little further on to find the defences.
