Geocache Description:

Oxton Cricket Club is situated at the top of Townfield Lane near Oxton. This is not a difficult cache but be wary of muggles and warning be careful of dangers like cutting yourself on fence or branches.

The Oxton Cricket Club was formed in 1875 after a meeting of gentlemen on the 27th of September 1875 at the Queens Arm’s Hotel.

The gentlemen proposed that a cricket club be formed at Oxton and that a committee be appointed.

Work began on the ground in January 1876. Costing £70 pound it included a plot 25 yards square which was laid out for croquet, lawn tennis etc. In 1877 an amount not exceeding £10 pounds was voted to enlarge this area so that it might be used for lawn bowls.

In the first season there was no pavilion and a tent was used. Plans for a pavilion were prepared in 1876 at a cost of £320. The pavilion was enlarged in 1883 by adding a new front and thereby doubling the accommodation at a cost of £300. Very little changes were made to the pavilion in the next 70 years apart from minor alterations such as adding a partition to the changing rooms for the benefit of visiting teams.

In the winter of 1923/4 the third team wicket was laid and third XI matches were played only when the second XI were at home. The third XI pavilion was built in 1927, prior to that a tent was used.

The ground was purchased in 1928 for the sum of £4000 – members and local residents subscribing £3300 “to preserve the ground as an open space and playing field”.

In 1959 work started on new changing rooms and showers at the back of the pavilion. Alterations were made in the old building to enlarge the bar and to convert all the space overlooking the ground into a club room. Electricity was installed the same year and the gas lighting disappeared.

Major redevelopment of the pavilion began in October 1996 which included extending the main building and adding upstairs changing rooms and a balcony. This work was completed in the summer of 1997 with funding provided by the national lotteries.

Oxton Cricket Club continues to develop to provide the best facilities for its players and members. The club is committed to the development of junior cricket and offers some of the best coaching, playing and training facilities on the Wirral.

2006 saw the opening of new net facilities and work on the viewing and seating area to the front of the pavilion was finished at the start of the 2008 season.

This cache is situated opposite the club on a metal fence. Please be careful crossing road and watch out for muggles.
