Dies ist der erste EarthCache von Aschersleben, der ältesten Stadt Sachsen-Anhalts.
This is the first EarthCache of Aschersleben, the oldest town of Saxony-Anhalt.

Der Burgberg von Aschersleben, genannt Alte Burg, wurde schon zur Jungsteinzeit von Menschen bewohnt. Hockergräber, die an der Nordostseite des Plateaus gefunden wurden, lassen darauf schließen. Besondere Bedeutung erhielt er jedoch erst im 3. Jahrhundert n.Chr. Damals wurde er als Fliehburg genutzt. Drei Seiten schützte der nahe Fluss, nach Südosten wurden drei quer über das Plateau verlaufende Wälle errichtet. Wahrscheinlich gab es dort auch eine echte Burg. Der innere Wall ist noch fast vollständig erhalten. Im 15. Jahrhundert verlor der Burgberg seine strategische Bedeutung und man errichtete zwei Steinbrüche. Der eine lag im heutigen Stephanspark, der andere wahrscheinlich bei den angegebenen Fotokoordinaten. Ab 1840 begannen die Parkgestaltungen auf dem Burgberg. Unterhalb wurde 1903 das Freibad eröffnet. Auf dem Burgberg befindet sich auch seit 1973 der Tierpark (heute Zoo). Heute ist es das schönste Erholungsgebiet der Stadt. Bei klarem Wetter lässt sich der Brocken sehen, der höchste Berg des Harzes.
Der Burgberg erhebt sich um etwa 40 Meter über der Stadt. Das Plateau ist 1,2 Kilometer lang und durchschnittlich 500 Meter breit. Der Entstehungszeitraum liegt in der Kreidezeit vor 60-80 Millionen Jahren. Die Schichten der Scholle fallen nach Südwesten im Winkel von 45 Grad ein. Durch die verschiedenen Gesteinsarten (siehe Infotafel) ist auch die Pflanzenwelt hier vielfältig. Der ehemalige Steinbruch ist von Landesamt für Geologie und Bergwesen Sachsen-Anhalt als Geotop eingestuft.
Das musst du tun, um den EarthCache zu loggen: An den angegebenen Koordinaten befand sich bis März 2013 eine Infotafel über die Geologie des Burgberges. Da sie über die Jahre stark gelitten hat, wird sie wird im Moment erneuert. Bis es hier mit einer frischen Tafel weitergeht, gibt es hier das Bild der alten, damit der Earthcache weiter bestehen kann.

Ganz in der nähe der Infotafel geht rechts ein Pfad bergab. Folge ihm bis auf die asphaltierte Straße und gehe dann nach links bis zu diesen Koordinaten N 51° 44.830 E 011° 26.483 .
2. [an Wegpunkt 2] Beschreibe mit eigenen Worten, wie die Gesteinsschichten gelagert sind. Nicht klettern oder auf dem Geröll versuchen, nach oben zu kommen!!!
3. [an Wegpunkt 1 & zwischen den Wegpunkten] Wie heißt der Fluss, der auf der Tafel eingezeichnet ist und dem du auf deinem Weg begegnet bist?

Freiwillige Zusatzaufgabe [an Wegpunkt 2]: Mach ein Foto von dir oder deinem GPS vor der Kalkstein-Felswand (Siehe Beispielfoto, aber hey?! Für echte Earthcacher ist das doch Ehrensache, oder?).
Die Terrain-Wertung gilt nur für den Weg bergab von der Infotafel und für die letzten fünf Meter zur Felswand (dort ist der Trampelpfad sehr zugewachsen).

The Burgberg of Aschersleben, also called Alte Burg, was already occupied by humans in the Neolithic Age. Graves that were found on the north-east side of the plateau imply that. Special meaning got it first in the third century AD. In those days it was used as a so called Fliehburg, a refuge. Three sides were protected by the near river, the fourth side by three ramparts. Probably there was also a real castle. The inner rampart is nearly entire maintain. In the 15th century the Burgberg lost its strategic relevance and two stone querrys were established. The first was located in today's Stephanspark, the second probably by the coordinates of the photo position. From 1840 the design of the park began on the Burgberg. Beneath it the open-air bath was opened in 1903. On the Burgberg also the Zoo has been located since 1973. Today it is the most beautiful recreation area of the town. You can see the Brocken, the highest mountain of the Harz mountains, from here when the view is clear.
The Burgberg rises circa 40 meters above the town. The plateau is 1,2 kilometers long and 500 meters wide on average. The time of origin is the cretaceous age, 60-80 million years ago. The layers of the clod occur southwestward at an angle of 45 degrees. Because of the different types of stone (look at the info board) also the flora is manifold here. The former stone quarry is classified as a geotope by the state agency for geology and mining of Saxony-Anhalt.
This is your task to log this EarthCache: The coordinates take you to place where an info board about the geology of the Burgberg was located till March 2013. The board was old and will be renewed. Here is the picture, have a look at it and find out the answers for these tasks:

Now follow the path that goes downhill a few steps frome here. When you reach the asphalted road go leftwards to N 51° 44.830 E 011° 26.483 .
2. [waypoint 2] Describe in your own words the way the stone is piled up. Do not climb or try to walk on the debris upwards!!!
3. [waypoint 1 and between both waypoints] What is the name of the river that is marked on the board?
