The Hochschwab is a mountain group which is part of Eisenwurzen, a nature reserve. The vast limestone plateau covers an area of approx. 155sqm. The lime alps consist predominantly of powerful limestone sequences and partitial dolomite. That mountain course is result of an enormous thrust fault of sea sediments from southern direction.
A majority of the rocks was deposited in the period from the upper Permian to Jurassic on the northern continental shelf that geologically to Africa belonging Adriati plate.

The Kläfferquelle near Wildalpen, the biggest water spring in Europe, is one of six springs, which feed the 2nd Viennese Fresh Water Pipeline. In springtime during snow melting, inconceivable ten cubic metres of water per second come out of the rock.

After the tapping of the spring the long journey of the water begins. From there it flows through channels and tunnels in a natural free decline into town.
To cross rivers and valleys, the water uses over 100 aqueducts. The distance is nearly 200km, the hight difference is 361m and the flow time is about 36 hours.
