One of my favorite things to study is WWII. All the battles and events that took place are really interesting. One of the greatest battle that took place in the Pacific theater was on the island of Iwo Jima
Even though it is a very small island, it proved to be one of the more deadly battles that the U.S. participated in during the Pacific Theater.
While the battle was raging, one of the most iconic pictures in U.S. Military history was taken by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. Six U.S. Marines were photographed raising an american flag on Mount Suribachi after 5 days of intense fighting. It won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography and has come to be regarded in the United States as one of the most recognizable images of World War II.
