Geocache Description:

Date: 19 September 2010 (Sunday)

Time: 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.

Place: Gateway Village (Borden), PEI

Purpose: Picnic & Social Fun

Arrrrrrgh, me mateys, storm the Bridge ye scurvy dogs and unleash yer inner buccaneer!

Today salutes and commemorates two great "icons":

1) the Confederation Bridge -- the world's longest bridge (12.9 km) over ice-covered water, linking PEI with "the rest of Canada",

and

2) pirates and the "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" (visit link) If you need help "talkin' like a pirate", check out "the translator" (visit link)

The Bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic between 0600 and 1300 hours to facilitate the Terry Fox Run. The last time (and only the second time) the Bridge permitted walkers and runners (2005), there was over 14,000 participants!!

Come join fellow Island cachers and CFAs (Come From Away) for a picnic in Gateway's "Heritage Park". You must bring your own food and beverages. This is a great opportunity to mingle with other cachers and talk like a pirate!

Who'll show up lookin' like "Captain Jack" (or packin' "Captain Morgan")? Me dabloom's on "Cap'n callbecks", "Pirate Guy" (peiguy) and "peg leg" (Nook&Crannie), but don't count out the old dryland sailor hisself! And what would a pirate gatherin' be without a wench or two?

And, yes, there will be a pirate trivia contest for a chance to raid the treasure chest!

*****NOTE*****

If you want to walk or run on or across the Confederation Bridge -- separate from our Event -- you MUST pre-register (it's free) at (visit link) There will be NO registrants accepted the day of our event.

DID YOU KNOW??

- During a 1988 plebiscite, only 59.4% of Islanders voted in favour of a "Fixed Link" (as the Bridge was referred to prior to officially naming it the "Confederation Bridge" in 1997)

- Built between the fall 1993 and spring 1997, the Bridge cost $1.3 billion and came in on budget 1 day early?

- The Bridge required a Constitutional Amendment (1993) to deal with the "fixed link" and charging of tolls.

- The May 31, 1997 opening day "Bridge Walk & Run" had ~ 75,000 participants (~ 75% of the Island's total population)
