Salvation's Lookout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LadyCache: Went out yesterday to replace cache. Road construction has removed the little road and parking area in this area and barriers are placed preventing access (which is all deep mud and muck anyways. This highway will be under construction for some time so will archive. So sad....

Geocache Description:

Not too far from parking but may be difficult for a wheelchair due to soft ground and tall grassweeds.

Everytime I drive past this sign, I want to place a cache. It brings back memories of a weeklong retreat I took with my six children many years ago. The camp provided us some wonderful times spent together as a family away from everyday life and its challanges in a single-parent home.

Gene Eppley Camp and Retreat Center is a non-profit Christian camp owned and operated by The Salvation Army. It is located in Bellevue and just south of Omaha, NE, on 118 acres.

In 1947, The Salvation Army Western Division was given land bordering the Platte River by Eugene Eppley for the development of a camp. The overall goal for Gene Eppley Camp & Retreat Center is to serve people of all ages who are primarily from low-income and single parent households.

Gene Eppley Camp & Retreat Center offers a wholesome camping program designed to give the camper an outdoor recreational experience with a foundation of character building skills that will challenge the campers socially, educationally, spiritually and physically. The campers are encouraged, counseled and exposed to experiences designed to build their self-esteem, leadership and life-long learning skills.

Each year sessions are offered to youth, senior citizens and families that are low-income, homeless or single parent households who desire camp experiences and enrichment activities.

The camp is a picturesque and tranquil setting consisting of 118 acres of which 100 acres have been developed. Today Gene Eppley Camp & Retreat Center is needing some redevelopment. This is a multiphase project to incorporate sound environmental choices for the development of trails, upgrading of water and waste treatment systems and use of environmentally sound practices for the placement of new lodging facilities, multipurpose and maintenance buildings.
